As many archaeological finds show, the Etruscans already made wine in Umbria. Even the Romans enjoyed the Umbrian wines, and the Medieval popes were especially fond of the sweet white wine from Orvieto. However, it’s only since the 19th century that the wines have been classified as really good. In part because of the support of the Antinori and Lungarotti families, and partly because of the modernisation of wine-making techniques. By now 20% of the Umbrian wines has the DOC or DOCG predicate, and this just percentage keeps rising. More than enough to sample and judge the Umbrian wines for yourself.
Every week at Borgo Castello Panicaglia we organise a wine tasting session with delicious regional wines and matching snacks. Ask about dates and availability.
